Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA)

June 12, 2023 1

Key Focus

The PMSMA schema focuses on ensuring comprehensive and quality antenatal care for pregnant women, promoting safe motherhood and reducing maternal mortality.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India, has launched the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan. This program aims to provide assured, comprehensive, and quality antenatal care to all pregnant women on the 9th of every month, free of cost.

The Hon'ble Prime Minister of India highlighted the purpose and objective of introducing the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan during the episode of Mann Ki Baat on 31st July 2016.

Under PMSMA, designated government health facilities offer a minimum package of antenatal care services to women in their 2nd or 3rd trimesters of pregnancy.

The program also follows a systematic approach to engage with the private sector. This includes motivating private practitioners to volunteer for the campaign and developing strategies to raise awareness and encourage private sector participation in the Abhiyan at government health facilities.

Goal Objective

The objective of the PMSMA is to enhance the quality and reach of Antenatal Care (ANC), encompassing diagnostic and counseling services, in alignment with the Reproductive Maternal Neonatal Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A) Strategy.

The program aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Ensure that all pregnant women in their second or third trimester receive at least one antenatal checkup conducted by an OBGY specialist or physician.
  2. Enhance the quality of care provided during antenatal visits by offering the following services:
    • Relevant diagnostic services as required
    • Screening for applicable clinical conditions
    • Proper management of any existing clinical condition, such as anemia, pregnancy-induced hypertension, gestational diabetes, etc.
    • Adequate counseling services and accurate documentation of the services provided
    • Provide an additional opportunity for pregnant women who have missed their antenatal visits
  3. Identify and create a list of high-risk pregnancies based on obstetric/medical history and existing clinical conditions.
  4. Facilitate appropriate birth planning and preparation for complications for each pregnant woman, especially those identified with risk factors or co-morbid conditions.
  5. Place special emphasis on early diagnosis, effective management, and appropriate care for women with malnutrition.

By achieving these objectives, the program aims to enhance the overall quality of antenatal care and improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes.

Key Features Of PMSMA

The foundation of PMSMA lies in the belief that by ensuring every pregnant woman in India receives a thorough examination and appropriate investigations at least once during the program, followed by proper follow-up, we can significantly reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates in our country.

The antenatal checkup services will be provided by OBGY specialists, radiologists, and physicians, with additional support from doctors in the private sector to complement the efforts of the government sector.

Risk Indicator

To simplify risk assessment, a green sticker will be assigned to women who do not exhibit any identified risk factors, while a red sticker will be assigned to women with high-risk pregnancies.
