The PMSMA schema focuses on ensuring comprehensive and quality antenatal care for pregnant women, promoting safe motherhood and reducing maternal mortality.
The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India, has launched the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan. This program aims to provide assured, comprehensive, and quality antenatal care to all pregnant women on the 9th of every month, free of cost.
The Hon'ble Prime Minister of India highlighted the purpose and objective of introducing the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan during the episode of Mann Ki Baat on 31st July 2016.
Under PMSMA, designated government health facilities offer a minimum package of antenatal care services to women in their 2nd or 3rd trimesters of pregnancy.
The program also follows a systematic approach to engage with the private sector. This includes motivating private practitioners to volunteer for the campaign and developing strategies to raise awareness and encourage private sector participation in the Abhiyan at government health facilities.
By achieving these objectives, the program aims to enhance the overall quality of antenatal care and improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes.
The antenatal checkup services will be provided by OBGY specialists, radiologists, and physicians, with additional support from doctors in the private sector to complement the efforts of the government sector.
To simplify risk assessment, a green sticker will be assigned to women who do not exhibit any identified risk factors, while a red sticker will be assigned to women with high-risk pregnancies.
